RADIO PLAY is an original theatre piece created by Rwanda's Amizero Kompagnie. Radio Play has performed to critical acclaim in Kigali, the Burundian theatre festival Buja Sans Tabou, Kampala International Theatre Festival, the Story Moja Festival and at PAWA254 in Nairobi, the Crossing Boundaries festival in Addis Ababa, Ca se passe à Kin in DRC, and the CIFCET festival in Egypt. The bilingual cast plays in both French and English. The play tells the story of a radio station in a small central African country where the DJ plays too much Celine Dion and freedom of expression is not a given. Radio Play uses comedy, theatre and dance to explore issues of freedom of speech and self- censorship that resonate throughout the region and beyond.
When a young woman, Lady Hibou works on the night watch as host of late night call-in show, the secrets of others— stories of the unsaid, failed relationships, secret diseases and affairs start to infect her life and imagination as she tries to stay awake. When she signs out, the morning DJ Lark comes in. His job is to turn the raw facts into cheery messages of hope, but his skills at spinning nonsense come back to haunt him as the stories from the night watch collide with the morning facade. As the news from this troubled anonymous central African country becomes aggressively pleasant, we realize every character has a secret, even the radio hosts themselves.
